Employment Information

Termination Process

When employment is terminated, an employer must provide the employee with a Termination of Services or Lay-off Certificate, as well as sending one to the National Insurance Office within one week of the termination. If the employer does not provide a certificate, they face a penalty of $1000, with an extra $200 added on for each day that they fail to comply with employer requirements. A certificate must be given, no matter how long the employee worked for the company.

Notice period

Two weeks’ notice up to five years. Four weeks’ notice for more than five years’ employment. 

Probation Period

The probation period in Barbados is 3 months.

Severance Details

For the first 10 years an employee works, severance is calculated at a rate of 2.5 weeks’ pay per year of service. From the 11th to 20th year at work, severance is calculated at three weeks’ pay per full year worked.
